The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls is a summer academic program for young women ages 14 to 17 who love reading and who want to strengthen their writing skills over the summer.
The literature to be studied in the course includes poetry, fairy tales, drama, and 19th-century novels. Students will also participate in journalism and creative writing workshops. Modeled on the First-Year Writing Seminars at Princeton University, the program also includes elements designed to prepare students for the college application process, with half of each class meeting devoted to the study of literature and the other half to workshops and exercises geared at building critical reading and writing skills. Students will emerge from the course with a draft of a college application essay.
Meetings will be held in the Horace Greeley House in downtown Chappaqua, New York. The Greeley House is within easy walking distance from the Chappaqua Metro North station.
Enrollment is capped at 15. For enrollment information please contact: [email protected] or 914.314.7009
The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls is directed by Dr. Keri Walsh (M.Phil Oxford, PhD. Princeton). Dr. Walsh has
taught at Oxford and Princeton University, and is now a professor of English Literature at Fordham University. She is the editor of
The Letters of Sylvia Beach (the first publisher of James Joyce’s Ulysses and the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop
in Paris). Dr. Walsh is now completing an edition of Joyce’s Dubliners.
Students of 2016 shared these thoughts about the program:
“The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls was a very open, sharing environment. We did a lot of fun activities, including my personal favorite, the poem we made from choosing lines from different novels. Being in an all-girl environment encouraged us to speak up and allowed us all to bond quickly. A lot of fun, and much more than a college prep/writing writing.”
“This program is a wonderful way to interact with young girls your age, and experience the wide world of literature and writing. You get to practice writing college essays and read classic literature, all while making new friends with girls who are friendly and fun to be around!! It’s a pleasurable and very informative experience you’ll never forget!”
“The setting for the program is incredible and sets up a warm and relaxing atmosphere. The Horace Greeley House is gorgeous, Professor Walsh is a kind and bubbly person, and all us girls got to know each other really well. Content-wise, we got to do fun creative writing exercises but still accomplished a published journalism article and a college application essay. And there are a lot of bonuses as well including learning how to knit and getting to keep used books.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls. In my session I was given the chance to write an article in Inside Chappaqua. In addition the group learned more about the college admissions process and tactics on writing a great college essay. I would recommend the program for any girl who loves to thrill of learning, meeting other with shared interests, and wishes to advance their writing skills.”
"The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program is a writing course with a very casual and close-knit atmosphere. The class is split into 1.5 hour shifts- for the first hour and a half, we look at literature and write about it, or do writing projects (such as journalism); for the second half, we look at college essays and brainstorm/write our own. While this all happens, Prof. Walsh gives us writing tips, allows us to share our own writing, and also provides a relaxing, fun environment. The program releases you as a student with a polished college essay, knowledge about literature analysis, and useful tips for writing creatively."
"The Chappaqua Summer Writing Program for Girls is a wonderful experience for high school girls from all different locations. The relaxed and supportive environment fostered by Professor Walsh promotes interesting conversation on a variety of topics. There are many different aspects of the program from college preparation to novel analysis to knitting. It is a great way to meet a bunch of girls with similar interests and I highly recommend the program to anyone who is interested."
